Membership Questions
HRI offers four membership options for hydropower owner/operators:
- HRI Owners
- Project Contributors
- Data Contributors
- Collaborators
Each option provides a different level of access to HRI tools, data, project participation, reports, and leadership opportunities. The HRI Membership Options section provides a detailed comparison of available functions and pricing.
Data Questions
HRI works closely with every data contributor to ensure that the data shared with HRI is accurate and reliable. All data ingested passes through our quality assurance process. This process starts during data discovery. Data deemed “bad” or not understood by HRI will not be visible to HRI Platform users or included in reports. Note, however, that “bad” data is not the same as anomalous data. HRI does not remove or exclude data from the HRI Platform unless a contributor has alerted HRI a sensor is bad, no longer used, or other specific reason.
Anomalous data is often what users are seeking and the ability to identify specific data signatures leading to failure is valuable information. HRI has established typical valid ranges for data and allows users to optionally exclude data that does not conform to those ranges. Lastly, HRI maps all data to the same framework allowing HRI participants to create reports in a consistent format.
HRI ensures the security of both users and contributors through our 5-point data security process:
- Only encrypted connections are permitted to the HRI platform. If you attempt to access HRI without an encrypted connection, you will not be able to access the platform.
- Only HRI can delete or modify data. Contributors only provide data to HRI and cannot manipulate their own or other data.
- All data is anonymized before being output on a report.
- HRI ensures all data transfers are encrypted.
- HRI utilizes mirrored and protected cloud storage to protect against geographic or server failures.
We will work with you to get your data onto the HRI platform. Any digital data is compatible. There are no data system or format requirements.
No, HRI does not collect data in real time, however, contributors are providing new data frequently.
No - HRI is working to compile the largest and most comprehensive Hydropower dataset in the world.
Yes, there is no minimum amount of data you are required to contribute.
As of December 2025, HRI has approximately 12,775 operational datapoints, 155,000 outage events, and 32,000 maintenance events. Data is updated regularly. The HRI dataset goes back as far as 2003, depending on the contributing member.
Contributors typically update their data sometime between once a day and once a month.
HRI will work with you to optimize integration with your systems and processes to ensure you are able to reliably upload your data in a timely manner.
Currently, data available through HRI includes:
- Operational, time-series data from units, main power transformers, dissolved oxygen systems, and some plant-level systems.
- Outage Event type data, including planned and unplanned outages.
- Maintenance type data representing planned maintenance actions.
HRI also collects nameplate information about turbines, generators, and governors and allows filtering data by these details.
HRI’s Customer Support Team is available to all Members and Researchers to assist with locating, extracting, and explaining data from the HRI Platform. The team can aid in obtaining data for your project needs as well as connecting you with the contributor of the data to get additional information.
For support in analyzing data, a request must be made for a use case or project.
Data Security
Yes, HRI ensures you are the only one who will know what data belongs to your organization. No data is output by the HRI without being anonymized.
Data is transferred and stored securely using Amazon Web Services.
Data Onboarding
The data onboarding process includes many steps, from locating data, mapping data, transferring data, and making data available on the HRI platform. The expected minimum duration for the full process is 6 months. The activity with the highest level of effort is identifying what data is in/out of scope and mapping tags. Total time depends on the number of sites, the quantity of data for each site, the consistency of naming conventions between sites, and commitment from Contributor’s team. HRI makes a detailed onboarding guide available to contributing members.
Your data (and the data of other contributors) will be viewable through the HRI Platform. Platform Help documentation is available to guide you in creating your first report. Currently reports are compiled in .csv format, however, we are open to exploring other avenues to fit your needs.
HRI Owners and Contributing Members have immediate access to all contributor data already onboarded and available through the HRI Platform. You also get access to the HRI Member Portal which includes access to all documented materials from past projects, analyses, and initiatives allowing you to begin learning immediately.
While onboarding, you can also collaborate with other members through the HRI Discussion Board. The Discussion Board is used to discuss challenges, solicit advice, and share information on anything from mechanical, electrical, or maintenance issues to simple and complex process issues.
